What is hybrid flooring?
Hybrid flooring is the most popular flooring upgrade in Melbourne right now - and for good reason. It combines the realistic timber look of luxury vinyl with a rigid SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) core that makes it dimensionally stable, completely waterproof and far more durable than traditional vinyl or laminate.
Unlike engineered timber, hybrid flooring won't swell, warp or delaminate from moisture. Unlike cheap vinyl, it won't flex or feel hollow underfoot. Quality 7mm hybrid flooring feels solid, looks like real timber, and handles Melbourne's temperature swings without moving.
At LVJ Timber Floor, we supply and install 7mm SPC hybrid flooring starting from $30/m² - available in herringbone and straight lay patterns across Melbourne's western suburbs.
Hybrid flooring supply costs in Melbourne
Supply costs vary based on thickness, wear layer quality and the brand. Here's how to read the market:
Budget range: $20 - $29/m²
Usually 4-5mm with a thin wear layer (0.1-0.2mm). These products flex underfoot, scratch easily and are more likely to fail within 5 years. We don't supply or recommend this tier - the savings aren't worth it when you factor in replacement costs.
Mid range: $30 - $45/m²
This is the sweet spot. A quality 7mm SPC core with a proper wear layer (0.3mm+) gives you 20+ years of performance in a normal residential home. This is what LVJ Timber Floor supplies - starting at $30/m² for straight lay and $35/m² for herringbone.
Premium range: $45 - $70/m²
8-12mm products with extra-thick wear layers, wider planks and more realistic embossing. Good for commercial applications or extremely high-traffic homes. For most Melbourne residential projects, the mid range performs just as well.
LVJ supply pricing: Straight lay hybrid from $30/m². Herringbone hybrid from $35/m². Available in Golden Oak Reserve, Natural European Oak, Silver Ash Mist and Smoked Walnut Drift. View all products →
Hybrid flooring installation costs in Melbourne
Installation is typically priced per m² and varies based on a few key factors. Here's what moves the number:
Straight lay installation: $20 - $35/m²
Standard straight plank installation. The lower end applies to large, simple rooms with a good subfloor. The higher end applies to small rooms, lots of angles and cuts, or where subfloor preparation is required.
Herringbone installation: $25 - $50/m²
Herringbone requires precision cutting and careful layout planning. Every plank is cut at a 45-degree angle and the pattern has to be centred properly for it to look right. It takes longer and requires more skill - which is reflected in the price. At LVJ, we specialise in herringbone and it's one of our most requested services across Footscray, Yarraville and Williamstown.
What increases installation cost
- →Subfloor levelling - if the concrete or timber subfloor isn't flat, it needs to be fixed before installation
- →Removal of old flooring - tiles, carpet or existing vinyl all add time and labour cost
- →Small or irregular rooms - more cuts, more waste, more time
- →Stairs - each step needs to be individually cut and fitted with nosing
- →Furniture moving - if you want us to move heavy furniture, we can, but it adds time

How to get an accurate quote in Melbourne
Online calculators can give you a rough ballpark, but they can't tell you the most important things: the condition of your subfloor and how much prep it needs.
A subfloor that looks fine to the eye can have dips, bumps and moisture issues that need to be fixed before installation. If a tradesperson quotes you without seeing the subfloor in person, treat that quote as approximate.
LVJ Timber Floor always does a free in-person measure and assessment before quoting. Long will come out, check the subfloor, measure your rooms accurately and give you a quote that covers everything - no surprises on the day.
